At the Q1E Trust, we recognise our responsibility to embed sustainability in everything we do.
The Q1E Sustainability Vision sets out our ambition to be net zero and climate-ready by 2030 and to provide best-in-class sustainability learning for our children, combined with engagement across the whole school communities that we serve.
Each Q1E school has signed-up to the Let’s Go Zero 2030 commitment and to the Education Nature Park. All our schools are also registered with EnergySparks to monitor and reduce our energy usage. From September 2025, our new partnership with Lunchtime Co and ProVeg UK brings pupils a healthier, more sustainable menu - recognised nationally with a School Plates Silver Award. Further details of this are given in the article below.
Our Q1E Sustainability Vision is based on three action areas:
Decarbonisation and Efficient Resource Use: We are working to reduce our energy consumption, transition towards zero carbon energy sources, minimise emissions and waste, and increase recycling.
Biodiversity and Protecting Nature: We are working to increase the size and quality of green spaces at our schools, in support of outdoor learning, well-being, and local biodiversity.
Climate Adaptation and Resilience: We are working to ensure that our school buildings, outdoor spaces, playgrounds, and operations are future-ready and adapted for changing weather patterns.
Within each action area, and across all of them, we seek to involve the children in innovative and connected ways to support their understanding of sustainability topics that are relevant for their future. We work to integrate this learning throughout the curriculum, while going above and beyond the national requirements, as well as by providing engaging extra-curricular opportunities.
In addition, we will work to engage our whole school communities in our activities.
We are committed to being recognised leaders in sustainable school operations, education, and whole school community engagement while we deliver on our Q1E Sustainability Vision.

Why this matters for Q1E and our schools
At Q1E, we are committed to embedding sustainability into all that we do. Our school catering plays a key role in achieving our sustainability goals.
ProVeg UK’s School Plates Awards celebrate caterers who prioritise health and sustainability. Their evidence-based approach focuses on small but powerful changes—such as the wording, presentation and labelling of vegetarian and plant-based dishes—to make climate-friendly choices easier and more appealing for children.
A recent YouGov survey found that 71% of 5–16-year-olds are worried about climate change. By helping pupils understand how food affects both their health and the planet, we can support more confident, climate-conscious choices.
Our Silver Award-winning menu includes:
More appealing plant-based dishes
Tasty and nutritious vegetarian options
Thoughtful tweaks to reduce environmental impact while maintaining variety and flavour
While still keeping meat options
All meals continue to meet the School Food Standards and have been designed with pupil health and satisfaction in mind.
What Difference Could It Make?
If 2,000 pupils across Q1E schools switched just one animal-based meal to a plant-based meal per week over a school year (39 weeks), we could save:
CO₂ emissions equivalent to 39 flights from London to New York
